The keto diet has become very popular in recent years,
with celebrities such as Halle Berry and Jenna Jameson (among many others)
swearing by it. The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet and is really what
we can maybe consider an upgrade or supercharged version of previous low-carb
diets. It has been shown to be a very effective method to lose weight and can
also improve overall health. So how does keto work?
The standard American and Western diet has, for a long
time, been high in carbohydrates, with saturated fats considered the foods to
avoid. However, we now know that refined carbs such as white bread have their
own issues. When you eat a meal high in carbs, these are converted into
glucose, which your body uses as its standard fuel.
How the keto diet works is to switch your body’s main
fuel source from glucose to fats. Since the keto diet involves eating low-carb
foods, the glucose becomes unavailable as fuel, and when your reserves have
been used up, the body and brain must find another source of fuel. Your liver
begins to take fatty acids and converts them into ketones, which become the new
fuel. The state where your liver is producing increased amounts of ketones is
called “ketosis”.
The most obvious result of this is fat loss, which is why
many refer to your body being a “fat-burning machine” while in ketosis, and
weight loss can happen quickly. Some go on to stay on a keto-style diet for
many years.
Just a few of the benefits of ketosis and the keto diet
are:
- Feeling more full, and not needing to eat as many
stacks, even while eating less calories than before.
- Weight loss – specifically fat loss rather than losing
muscle mass.
- Higher overall energy and less fatigue, better sleep.
