How long does it take keto to work?

If you are wondering how long it takes for the keto diet to work, and how long ketosis takes to kick in, you’re not alone. It is one of the most common questions we have received about the keto diet. It only takes about 1-3 days for ketosis to kick in, which means that your body has begun using fat and ketones instead of sugar as its fuel source – this is because you have cut out carbs and sugars, while increasing your intake of fats, such as eggs, meat, nuts, butter, olive oil, coconut oils etc.

What does it mean to reach ketosis?

In the first couple of days, your body and brain will work through the stored glucose reserves - when these have been used up, your body enters the state of ketosis, which means your liver increases the rate at which it produces ketones from fat, both from the foods you have eaten and from your own body fat, hence the weight loss that is seen with this method of dieting.

The reason your liver increases ketone production is simply because it is a natural way your body produces energy, although usually not as rapidly when the body can rely on glucose for its energy instead. Simply moving away from foods with a high sugar content can result in marked improvements in overall health

So how long will it take for the keto diet to work?

This is a bit more complex, as the keto diet is really more than just a diet – it is changing the way you eat to make energy from a different source to the one which your body has been using for a long time. When you first switch to a ketogenic diet, you may experience some side effects, known as the keto flu, while your body becomes adapted to your new diet - managing your fluids during this period can assist with this. It normally takes around a week to 10 days for your body to become keto adapted, and at this point, you will start to see and feel the positive benefits of the keto diet (see 7 Benefits of the Keto Diet here).

7 Benefits of the Keto Diet

When you hear about the ketogenic diet, the first thing you perhaps think of is what could possibly make it as good as people say. The answer is, there are enough benefits to change your life. What exactly is a ketogenic diet? The keto program recommends a diet that is low on carbs, moderate on protein and high in fat. The idea is to fine-tune nutritional intake in order to send the body into the metabolic state known as ketosis. The body enters a state of ketosis when it no longer has stores of glycogen sugar to fuel its energy needs. With sugar out of the way, the body has no choice but to tap its stores of fat to get by. The liver converts fat reserves into ketones to present to the body as an energy source. This is why the keto program is a good way to lose fat. 7 benefits of the keto diet Unlike other diets that offer practitioners a weight loss benefit and little else, the keto diet comes with several benefits. The keto diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet and is really what we can maybe consider an upgrade or supercharged version of previous low-carb diets. It has been shown to be a very effective method to lose weight and can also improve overall health. So how does keto work? The standard American and Western diet has, for a long time, been high in carbohydrates, with saturated fats considered the foods to avoid. However, we now know that refined carbs such as white bread have their own issues. When you eat a meal high in carbs, these are converted into glucose, which your body uses as its standard fuel. How the keto diet works is to switch your body’s main fuel source from glucose to fats. Since the keto diet involves eating low-carb foods, the glucose becomes unavailable as fuel, and when your reserves have been used up, the body and brai...
